Everything runs on your Mac.

Text recognition and QR reading use Apple Vision; translation uses Apple Translation — all on the device. No analytics, no sign-in. Images leave your Mac only when you press upload.

Every setting lives in ~/.config/khoi-screenshot/config.toml. Keep it in your dotfiles, copy it to another Mac, or edit it by hand and relaunch to apply.

Questions

Why does macOS block the app the first time?

Version 1.0.2 is signed with a self-created certificate and isn't notarized by Apple yet, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch. Follow step 2 under Install below; after that it opens normally.

Does anything I capture leave my Mac?

No, unless you upload it — then it goes to Khoi Cloud (the default; links expire after 1–30 days) or your own S3, R2 or Google Drive. Text recognition and QR reading run on-device with Apple Vision. If you add an external OCR service yourself, images are sent to that service. macOS may download language packs when you use Translate.

Is it like Lark's capture tool?

Yes — the mode bar, the toolbar and the ⌘⇧A and ⌥⇧R shortcuts follow Lark's layout, so there's nothing to relearn. Khoi Screenshot is a personal project, not affiliated with Lark or ByteDance.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

Not yet. Version 1.0.2 is for Apple silicon Macs (M1 or later) running macOS 14 or later. Translate needs macOS 15.

How do I update?

The app doesn't update itself yet. When a new version ships, download it here and replace the old app in Applications.

Why does it ask for Screen Recording permission?

macOS only lets apps read the screen with this permission — it's required to capture and record. Microphone and camera are only requested when you turn them on for a recording; Accessibility is only needed for features that read the interface: UI-element detection (Tab), active-window capture and Autoscroll.

Is it free?

No. Khoi Screenshot is free.

Install

  1. Open the downloaded .zip and drag Khoi Screenshot into Applications.

  2. Open the app. If macOS blocks it: on macOS 15 or later, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”; on macOS 14, Control-click the app › Open.

    Or run this in Terminal:

    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Khoi Screenshot.app"

  3. Grant Screen Recording permission when asked. If macOS asks, reopen the app so the permission takes effect.

  4. The K icon appears in the menu bar. Press ⌘⇧A to capture.
